How to Prevent the Causes of Slip and Fall Accidents

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, slips, trips, and falls make up 15 percent of all accidental deaths per year. They are the most frequent accidents leading to personal injury. The effects of accidents can vary from simple bruises to extremely serious injuries or even death. There are many situations that may cause slip and fall accidents. Most are preventable with general precautions and safety measures.
Conditions That Can Cause Slip and Fall Accidents Are:
  • Inadequate lighting
  • Wet or greasy floors
  • Spilled liquid or food on the floor
  • Poor stairway conditions such as broken handrails or worn out stairs
  • Dry floors with powder or dust
  • Excessive use of soap or polish on floor
  • Uneven or loose floor tiles or bricks
  • Unanchored or loose mat or carpet
  • Sloped or uneven walking surfaces
  • Weather conditions such as ice, snow, rain, hail, etc.
  • Damaged ladders

Some Tips for Preventing Slip and Fall Accidents Are:
Proper Housekeeping
Proper housekeeping can contribute to safety and the prevention of a slip and fall accident. In order for the housekeeping to be effective it must be done regularly and it is best to plan ahead, assign responsibilities and implement housekeeping procedures as a part of the daily routine. Good housekeeping practices include immediate clean ups, spills or wet area signs, removing or sweeping debris from the floor, etc.
Reduce Wet or Slippery Walking Surfaces
One of the major causes of slip and fall accidents are wet or slippery surfaces. Parking lots, sidewalks, food preparation areas or floors in general are the most common places where injuries occur. Preventive measures such as replacing floors, using moisture-absorbent mats, keeping parking lots and sidewalks clean and in good condition are some ways to further improve safety and reduce the risk of slip and fall accidents.
Adequate Lighting
Poor lighting makes it difficult to see obstacles and it increases the risk of accidents. Some preventive measures are keeping work areas well-lit and clean, replacing any burned out or missing lights, accessible light switches, etc.
Environmental Conditions
No matter how well the snow and ice are removed from sidewalks, parking lots and the surrounding streets, people can still encounter some slippery surfaces during the winter season.
Caution is required to avoid accidents.
  • When entering a building, dry off shoes as wet shoes on dry floors can cause a slip and fall accident.
  • Walk slower to react to traction changes and also wear slip resistant shoes or snow boots when walking on snow or ice.
  • During the daytime, wear sunglasses to help you see slippery areas.
Proper Footwear
Proper footwear must be worn based on the hazards that are present. Wearing proper footwear for better traction on slippery surfaces, applying abrasive strips to smooth walking surfaces, appropriate footwear for wet or oily floors in the workplace can help prevent slip and fall accidents.
